Our Church Leadership

Our church thrives because of the energy and style of the people who are a

part of our leadership. Here are a few of the people that make our

church community special:

DavidDavidKappus Kappus - Pastor

Pastor Dave was born in Alabama, grew up in Minnesota and has served congregations in ND, ID and WA.  He has what some would consider non-traditional hobbies for a pastor.  He is a percussionist and has played for worship bands, Christian Youth Theater and Spokane Children’s Theater.  Given that, this next one may not come as a surprise.  He's heavily involved in theater and acting!  He serves on the board of Ignite Community Theater in Spokane, has acted with several community theater groups, and has been in a few TV commercials and movies filmed in Spokane.  Finally, he is an avid motorcyclist and currently rides a 1987 Honda Goldwing Aspencade which you may see parked in front of the church on numerous occasions.

Sharing two out of three of these hobbies with him is his wife, Theresa, who is a librarian and assistant professor at Gonzaga.  They live with a border collie named Rory who may well be smarter than them and also with an orange and white tabby cat with the non-traditional yet color appropriate name of Pumpkin and a little grey(ish) spook of a kitten named Hermione.

Lisa Lisa Benneweis - Administrative Assistant

Lisa has been working in the Central office for the last 4 years, having come to us from the banking industry. She lives in Spokane with her husband and children.  You can often find her working in the yard or shuttling kids to various activities.

Paul Bruegbruggemeier paulgemeier - Chancel Choir Director

Paul Brueggemeier taught instrumental and choral music in the Spokane Public Schools for over 35 years. In that capacity he received Staffer of the Year in 1978, Music Teacher of the Year for Eastern Washington in 1987, Washington State Excellence in Education Award in 1990, was inducted into the Music Educator’s Hall of Fame in 2000 and was recognized as the Eastern Washington University Alumnus of the year in 2006.

He has directed church choirs all of his adult life, the last 25 years of which have been at Central.  He gives of his personal time directing tours at the Historic Davenport Hotel as a Docent.  He regularly is invited to conduct honor choirs and adjudicate music festivals throughout the Northwest.  He and his wife Sue have three adult children and 8 grandchildren.

Alice Alice Hostetter - Organist

Alice was born in Redlands, California and received her earliest music training there as well as in Sacramento.  After moving to Spokane she continued her musical studies at Whitworth University.  She has served as organist in California and In Spokane and has always loved church music.

Besides her passion for music she also is an enthusiastic bicyclist and happens to be the founder of the Spokane Bicycle Club.  Among many bicycle tours she and a friend rode from Spokane to Boston in the summer of 1985.  She also enjoys working on her family history and enjoys her three grown children and five grandchildren.

Joel Joel Zellmer - Carillon Choir Director

Joel was born in Iowa as a PK (Pastor's Kid) and his love for the Church was instilled in him at an early age.  He studied piano and organ for many years but Hand Bells have been his adult musical passion.  He and JodI played in the Spokane Community De Corores Hand Bell Choir for many years.  In his professional career he was computer programmer and a software technician.  Here at Central, if you don't find Joel adjusting bells or setting up bell tables, you will find him doing worship planning, physical worship setup, maintaining church facilities, singing in the Chancel Choir or as sound system operator.

He and his wife, Jodi share life together with their daughter Emma.
